VEGAN OPTIONS IN ATHENS, GREECE!

I love eating vegan food in Greece! (See all of the vegan yummies I ate in Santorini here.) I found while dining throughout Athens that Greeks has a passion for feeding people. And I’m okay with that, because I have a passion to eat.

I want to start with arguably the most popular, well-known veggie restaurant in Athens, Avocado. You can get there from the Syntagma Square metro stop & is a great location to start exploring the Plaka. Avocado’s diverse menu options include entrees, soups, salads and more. Avocado has a lot of vegan options and the vegetarian items can be made vegan.

I always enjoy ordering a vegan caesar salad and Keith got a Thai curry dish.

Right next door to Avocado is Gr-eatings, formally Four Seasons Bio Shop, a veggie friendly grocery/health store. There I found vegan multivitamins and organic tampons. They have a wide variety of items ranging from cosmetics, prepackaged foods, tofu, dairy-free milk & yogurts and produce. (I read on HappyCow that they carry vegan sunblock. An important item for Athens!) We received great costumer service with finding what we needed and they spoke English well.

I need to head back to Athens and go straight Falafellas. A “giant” falafel is one of the best meals I’ve had in Europe. So much flavor! & the portion size is rather large, but needed after walking around all day. Don’t let the line deter you from going to Falafellas. They are popular because they are delicious & don’t worry, it goes quick.

Look at these prices! I wish we would have discovered Falafellas earlier in our stay in Athens so we could have eaten here more than once. Like Avocado, you can take the Syntagma Square metro stop to get to Falafellas.

Doesn’t that make your mouth water? ?

And they aren’t kidding when they call it “giant.”

Another vegan treat in a very convenient location is Ice Queen Gelato. Near the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum you can find Ice Queen Gelato on a pedestrian street full of restaurants.

The vegan choices are primarily fruit flavors but thanks to my friend, Sabrina she’s informed me that Ice Queen is introducing more flavors like espresso and a vegan waffle & vegan nutella?! They also have soy milk for coffee.

It’s definitely a nice treat on a hot day in Athens.

Right up the street from Avocado, on the corner of the block we dined at this restaurant (I cannot remember the name of the restaurant and Google Maps (street view) hasn’t been updated since 2011. [what?]). There we found traditional Greek cuisine and wonderful customer service. There are many vegan options on a traditional Greek cuisine menu, this post helps navigate the items. We dined there twice & I got a falafel wrap with eggplant and yemista, stuffed tomatoes. I enjoyed them.

Other vegan options that I’ve hear good things about are Bamboo Vegan Store, a mini vegan market (I wish I went there!), and restaurants like Mystic Pizza, Mama TierraHealth Ecology & Rosebud. The Vegan Jetsetter also has great resources for vegan options in Athens.

I hope you enjoyed this little vegan writeup of Athens and find it useful. If you haven’t checked out my post about what we did in Athens, be sure to check it out here. I ate at a lot of yummy restaurants while there, and I hope you do too!
